Whether you’re a short term rental property manager, investor, hotelier or destination marketing organisation in Spain, do you know who is visiting Spanish short term rentals at the moment?
In this series of interactive charts, we take you through which guests have been visiting Spain, how this has changed since 2019 and how the top visiting nationalities have fluctuated through 2020 so far. We then see what percentage of guests visiting each Spanish Community have been Spanish in 2020.
The pie charts above displays the top 6 visiting nations (Spain plus the top 5 international visitors), and the percentage of total guests staying in Spanish short term rentals that they represent from January to June of 2019 and 2020. The top 5 guest nationalities both years were Spain, the US, the UK, France and Germany. However, in 2020 Great Britain provided most international visitors, overtaking the US as it fell from 11% to 10% of Spain’s total short term rental guests. Further in 2020, the proportion of Spanish guests rose 2% to 29% of total STR guests year to date, and the Netherlands provided more guests than Italy, beating it to 6th place.
In our line chart, we can see the fluctuation of the top 5 guest countries throughout 2020 so far. Predictably, as borders closed and international travel ground to a halt, the proportion of domestic short term rental guests in Spain shot up. From averaging below 30% of Spain’s total visitors, by the end of May, the Spanish were accounting for 80% of their total short term rental guests. At this stage, Americans (2.9%) are the most common international visitors.
Our final chart is a map of Spain and its Autonomous Communities. Here we illustrate the proportion of domestic guests in each community year to date in 2020.
La Rioja boasts the greatest proportion of Spanish guests at 82%, with Asturias and Aragón also exceeding 75% domestic guests. While only 19% of the guests staying in Balearics short term rentals are Spanish, the islands have seen a 75% increase over 2019, with only Murcia, Valencia and the Canary Islands – the least domestic community – seeing a decrease in their share of Spanish guests this year.
So where are Spanish guests from? The nation providing most international visitors to Spain this year has been the UK, but currently, most international guests are arriving from the US and France.
Meanwhile, the proportion of domestic guests at short term rentals in Spain has been persistently elevated across most Communities since the escalation of the COVID-19 crisis. While the year to date figure shows a 9% increase on 2019’s figure for the same period, at the end of May, 80% of short term rental guests in Spain were Spanish, compared with just 21% in the same period of 2019.
